The complete guide to dwarf seahorses in the aquarium ebook
We are now offering 3 different product options for these captive bred seashores. These are tank raised seahorses already acclimated to living in an aquarium environment and these seahorses have been trained to eat frozen brine shrimp. It has omega 3 and multiple vitamins along with an appetite stimulant. I suggest having a bottle of this available when they arrive. Add an extra squirt to the shrimp as they thaw out to help jump start them feeding in their new home.
We do not provide tanks; livestock only. Quick view Compare. Quick view Compare Add to Cart. Tigger Pods 6 oz. Foxy Tropicals Marine Life. Aquaculture Research Seahorses in focus: local ecological knowledge of seahorse-watching operators in a tropical estuary.
Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine 12 1 : 52, Part 1: live foods for adults. The dwarf seahorse Hippocampus zosterae is widely distributed throughout near-shore habitats of the Gulf of Mexico and is of commercial significance in Florida, where it is harvested for the aquarium and curio trades. Despite its regional importance, the genetic structure of dwarf seahorse populations remains largely unknown.
A total of bp provided sufficient resolution to delineate four populations of dwarf seahorses, as indicated by significant fixation indices.
Despite an overall significant population structure, we observed evidence of interbreeding between individuals from geographically distant sites, supporting the hypothesis that rafting serves to maintain a degree of population connectivity. All individuals collected from Pensacola belong to a single distinct subpopulation, which is highly differentiated from the rest of Floridian dwarf seahorses sampled.
Our findings highlight the utility of mtDNA markers in evaluating barriers to gene flow and identifying genetically distinct populations, which are vital to the development of comprehensive conservation strategies for exploited taxa. The trade in seahorses for aquarium fishes is contributing to the depletion of many wild populations of these animals.
Many seahorses are sold to replace those that have died in captivity as a result of husbandry problems. It can be particularly difficult to rear the young seahorses, because of their need for varied live food and their vulnerability to disease. These are small anemone like organisms that can outbreak in a system and possibly sting your small dwarf seahorses and their fry. Panacur is one treatment for these but it does not always work and they can be different to get rid of once in a system.
If you do not have sand and liverock you will want to make sure you have plenty of ceramic media for biological filtration. Dwarf seahorses prefer thin diameter hitching posts typically under a quarter inch in diameter. Live hitching posts such as macro algae or live Gorgonians sea fans or artificial coral decorations can be used.
Artificial decorations are easy to switch out and clean. Live macro algae and Gorgonians are beautiful and a lot of fun to keep. They come in a variety of shapes and colors and can make for an amazing display. One thing to keep in mind is there is a possibility of adding hydroids to your aquarium anytime you add any live corals or macroalgae.
Dwarf seahorse unlike most other species need to graze and feed slowly throughout the day. This means you will want to have a constant supply of live enriched baby brine shrimp to feed them.
Having a way to bypass the mechanical filtration during the day when feeding is helpful. For example, if you have a hang on the back filter with filter floss you can run it with no filter floss during the day so the baby shrimp stay in the system. At night you can add the filter floss for mechanical filtration and to pull out left over food. You will also want to make sure your water flow is dialed in properly.
You do not want it too high as you want your dwarf seahorses to be able to catch their food and not struggle to swim. You also do not want it to be too low. Moderate water flow is what we recommend.
